Join Us! 9/15: Volunteer with WEN for Creek to Bay Day at Channel Park
September 15, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 1:30 pm
Join your fellow WEN members and Oakland neighbors to clean and green Oakland’s creeks and shoreline! The 23rd Annual Oakland Creek to Bay Day on September 15th is part of California and International Coastal Cleanup Day, it’s the largest volunteer day in California and the world. On this day, thousands of volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to join watershed cleanup and restoration projects at creeks, parks, and neighborhood sites throughout Oakland to contribute to the removal of litter from waterways and shorelines across California, the nation, and in about 100 participating countries.
The Women’s Environmental Network group will be joining the Channel Park site for service from 9:00am to 1:00pm with coffee, pastries, and networking opportunities offered before the event. All family and friends are welcome and encouraged!
What to bring:
We strongly recommend bringing a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. Sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a long-sleeve layer are also a good idea. Tools, work gloves, light snacks, and water will be provided.
Getting there:
Channel Park is transit-accessible, and is an easy walk from the Lake Merritt BART station. From BART, head south on 10th toward Lake Merritt Channel. Just past the Laney College tennis courts and before the 10th St bridge, turn right and walk down the pedestrian pathway toward the Channel. Look for our work site and check-in table near the green pedestrian footbridge.
There is also ample street parking and free 5-hour parking at the Kaiser Convention Center parking lot, a 5 minute walk from the site.
- 8:00 – 8:30am: Tool distribution and time to connect with fellow volunteers
- 8:30 – 9:15am: Orientation while eating some snacks and drinking coffee (*feel free to bring extra snacks and definitely bring a refillable water bottle)
- 9:15am – 1:00pm: Litter removal, invasive vegetation removal, and/or native vegetation planting
- 1:00 – 1:15pm: Tool return and wrap-up
